Opening the Network Preferences:
To access the Network settings, click Apple, then Location, then Network Preferences.

Step 1: Location menu:
The location menu lists all connections (e.g., Home, Work, Automatic) on your computer.
The "Show" menu and "Tabs" below the Location menu apply to the selected Location.
Select your connection -or- Make a new connection:
Before taking time to check your settings, make sure you are looking at the settings for the right ISP.
Select your location (connection) by clicking the up-down arrow to the right of the Location menu.
Your selected location will have a check-mark in front of it.

Remove old/outdated connections:
Click the up-down arrow
to the right of the Location menu.
Then select Edit Locations.

Delete any connection not in use. You wouldn't want to inadvertently dial up to your old ISP.
You can have more than one connection. There are several reasons you may want to do this:
- A different member of the same household my be using different ISP's to connect to the Internet.
- Those who travel to another city often may want to add a separate configuration for each city.
Click Done when finished.

Step 2: Show menu:
The Show menu lists Connection types (Modem, Ethernet, AirPort) for this Location/Connection.
The "Tabs" below the Show menu change depending on the connection type.
Set the Connection Type to Modem:
Click the up-down arrow
to the right of the Show menu.
Then select Active Network Ports

There should only be a check-mark in front of Internal Modem.
Remove all other checkmarks, such as Built-in Ethernet or AirPort. These are not used for a dial-up modem Internet Connection.
Click Apply Now.

Click the up-down arrow to the right of the Show menu.
Then select Internal Modem to return to the Tab view for the connection.

Step 3: Edit the Location/Connection:
This is the third step in verifying the settings for your connection.
TCP/IP tab:
Select the TCP/IP tab.
Configure = If it's not selected, select Using PPP from the drop-down menu.
DNS Servers = 209.210.176.8 and 209.210.176.9.
Search Domains = Can be left blank.

PPP tab:
Here you'll put in the bulk of your Internet connection information:
Service Provider = name of your ISP or whatever you want to call the connection.
Account Name = this is your username to access the Internet. Be sure to put the @ispname.com (or .net) on the end of your username. Without this, you will not authenticate because you won't reach our ISP. You'll just get stuck somewhere in the public phone system.
Password = enter your password. It will be encrypted so you'll only see dots.
Important: passwords are case sensitive. Ensure your Caps Lock is DISabled.
Telephone Number = your Internet access number (not your telephone number). If you need to dial a '9', enter it. If you have call-waiting, you can disable it with '*70,'. If you're required to use 10- or 11-digit dialing in your area, enter '1' and the area code next. Finally, put in the Internet access number.
Alternate Number = if there is an alternate Internet access number, place it here. Follow the same rules as above.
Next, click the PPP Options button at the bottom of the screen.

PPP Options button:
Session Options = exactly what they say they are. You can choose what 'options' you'd like for your connection.
Note: Checking the first box will allow you to connect using your browser or email client. However, the browser may time out before you actually connect. This will result in the error 'The Page Cannot Be Displayed'. Click 'Refresh' or 'Home' to access the home page.
Advanced Options = leave at their default settings.
Click the OK button to save the changes and to close the window.
