Gearbox is quick and easy to install. Insert the CD and click on the new icon that appears. A small window showing the installation icon will open. Your icon may look different than the one pictured below.

Click on the icon to begin the installation.

Note: There is no need to install Gearbox more than once. Since Gearbox uses 'Configuration Sets', you can have different settings for home, work, travel, mom, dad, etc. If you do re-install Gearbox, you will get an error every time Gearbox runs a diagnostic: 'TCP/IP Preferences in use' . Click here for info on this error.

Click on the 'Simple' button to start the Simple Account Setup. This will configure Gearbox automatically by dialing up to your Internet Service Provider after asking you a few questions. This will work for existing customers as well as for new account sign-ups.

Click 'Next' to continue.

You can choose either an Easy Install or a Custom Install. The Easy Install is recommended for most users. It will automatically install Microsoft Internet 5 and Gearbox. Only choose Custom Install if you know what you're doing.

Gearbox will install to your Hard Drive in a folder called 'ISP's Name Applications'. You can choose a different location if you'd like.

When you click 'Next', the following message will appear.

Gearbox will close all applications, including Finder, before installing. Click 'OK' to continue.

When the installation is finished, click 'Next' to continue.

Click 'Next' again.

Type your area code correctly so that Gearbox can find the best dial-up number for you. If you use 10-digit dialing, place a checkmark in the 'Use Ten Digit Dialing' box. If you use 11-digit dialing, place a '1' in the second 'Dial' field.

Many workplace systems and hotels require you to dial a "9" to get an outside line. If this applies to you, put a 9 followed by two commas in the first 'Dial' field. The commas cause a slight delay of about two seconds to allow the phone lines to switch prior to dialing the phone number.

You can also put a *70,, in the first 'Dial' field to disable call waiting.

Most phone systems in the US and Canada use tone dialing. If you don't know which one you use, chances are it's tone.

Click 'Next' when you are ready.

Choose the correct modem and click 'Next'. Gearbox will now add the correct settings to your computer.

Click 'Next' when Gearbox finishes configuring your computer.

Click 'Restart' to end the preliminary installation process and reboot the computer. After restarting, we will continue the Simple Account Setup through the 'Registration Client,' which should start automatically.

Registration Client:

If you installed Gearbox using the Simple Account Setup, the Registration Client opens automatically after rebooting your computer. If it doesn't, you can still get to it by opening the application folder for your ISP found on the Hard Drive. It will be named "ISP's Name Applications" with your ISP's name.

Open the 'Registration Client' folder. (If you began with the Advanced Account Setup, the 'Registration Client' folder will not appear.)

Double-click on the 'Registration Client' icon to open it.

Click 'Next' to continue.

Gearbox needs to close all applications, including Finder, in order to install. Click 'OK' to continue.

Gearbox will now dialup to our ISP. You will be prompted to register your existing account or to sign up for a new one.

Note: If you are unable to connect at this point (page cannot be displayed, no dial tone, modem error, etc.), follow the instructions for uninstalling Gearbox. Then, re-install gearbox using the Advanced Account Setup.
